Canucks, Rangers and the Disallowed Goal

Tonight: Canucks at the Wild
- Backup goalie Curtis Sanford should get a chance to relive the days when he used to play hockey.
- Wild coach Jacques Lemaire is liable to get defensive. Again.
I’m looking forward to it, but I’m still a bit stuck on last night’s game against the NY Rangers—particularly that disallowed goal the Canucks scored (theoretically) in the second period.

Baumer Back to the NHL
by Alanah McGinley on 11/20/08 at 01:53 PM ET

As noted in the Vancouver Sun:
The Vancouver Canucks have called up veteran defenceman Nolan Baumgartner from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.
Baumgartner, 32, leads all Moose defencemen with six points (1-5-6) in 12 games this season.
From AHL hockey player, to AHL coach back to AHL player, and then a sharp west-coast turn back to the world of NHL defenseman. All in one week.
Oh, and “Baumer” also happens to be the name of J.J.’s dog. If Nolan ever retires, an entire sector of the professional hockey industry—not to mention that dog’s self-esteem—might entirely collapse.

The Crazy Canucks and Wellwood Mania

We finally got together last night and recorded a new episode of The Crazy Canucks:
Everyone gathered this evening for a quick episode where we discuss Luongo’s early November shutout streak, the third jersey, the Canucks making their film debut, and some making their debut in Manhattan. Third jersey talks, and a whole lot of Wellwood appreciation round out this edition of The Crazy Canucks.
Warning to Leafs fans: There’s a point in the show where I was trying to defend your honour (truly!) but that effort went a bit south when I sorta likened the flood of your jerseys onto the streets of Vancouver last Saturday to some sort of gay pride parade. (whoops...)
P.S. Incidentally I also spent a few minutes on this episode of The Rink Podcast last week, hosted by James (of Jerseys and Hockey Love) and Tom (of AOL Fanhouse). Their podcast is a great show covering the NHL in general, which I suggest everyone check out sometime.

Canucks Notes

Combine TSN’s Darren Dreger and the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch and what ultimately comes out of the wash is a trade rumor that flips Antoine Vermette and Matias Ohlund. - Hate the hockey media? Hire Alex Edler for your next attack. With a flu-symptom-inspired quarantine, he needs to fly commercial plus get his own $500 a night hotel room upon arrival, but he’s worth it. Surrounded by reporters in NYC yesterday, the quote from assistant coach Rick Bowness in the Vancouver Sun was “Breathe on them all Alex. Breathe on them all.”
- The Canucks photographer Jeff Vinnick accompanied the Canucks on their road trip and snapped a bunch of photos of them in New York. There’s a full photo gallery here.
- Joe Pelletier has been remembering 1994 lately. And I liked his article, although reading such things when the Canucks are just hours away from a game at MSG strikes me as a bit masochistic. (*Joe even includes the YouTube footage of Bure’s missed penalty shot; you know, just in case you wanted to relive that fun time again...)

I’ve been watching “Bears Playing Hockey” this morning.
There is no point in sharing this except that, well, it is freakin’ bears playing hockey. Get me some cocktails and I’d watch this video all day long.

Markus Naslund + Canucks = Great Memories

The Canucks fell short of their cup goal in Naslund’s dozen years in Vancouver but he need apologize for nothing. He was one of the franchise’s greatest players during some of its most exciting seasons.
Too bad on that April night as he skated off for the last time, no one stopped to say thanks. It had been quite a ride.
-- Jim Hughson, CBC
I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Pastries and Hockey Jerseys

Last night C&B posted the new Canucks jersey photos and about 90% of poll respondents voted positively—it broke down as “Not Bad” (48%) or they “Love it” (42%) with “Hate it” taking just 9% thus far. A small sampling, but that’s some pretty positive feedback all things considered, given the frightful history of Canucks jersey unveilings.
But Joseph Ruttle at The Province‘s Canucks Nation is wondering about copyright infringement when he looks at the shoulder logo and compares it to Vachon bakery.

Oh my. Can’t really argue with the inspiration for Johnny Canuck looking at that. Although for the record, I’d never even heard of Vachon before today, and yet now I’ll probably be thinking of the May West every time I look at this new logo. So maybe this’ll work out pretty well for the bakery either way.

Fire Fox Hockey

The other day the Canucks Fanzone introduced a Canucks branded upgrade for Fire Fox browsers.
Essentially it turns the navigation area into a control panel for the Canucks website (i.e. quick access to stats, schedules, the message boards, etc) plus it also cycles the headlines of the latest feature stories from the team onto your browser. There’s also a “light” option once you get it installed, which still has the useful features but reduces the Canucks branding if you prefer.
Here’s a screenshot for anyone that’s interested.

Canucks Third Jersey Released

Thanks to Zanstorm of Waiting for Stanley, I was given a head’s up about this news from the Canucks:
The Vancouver Canucks unveiled their new third jersey Thursday night at the Sports Celebrities Festival and they didn’t reinvent the hockey sweater with the look - it’s a classic vintage throwback that honours past eras of Canucks hockey.
The jersey, which will be officially worn on-ice by the Canucks when they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 15, is familiar in its overall look. Of course there’s some subtle twists on the original.
The sweater will make its first appearance on Saturday, meanwhile you can check out the photos and poll below.
